For 35 years, CIRCA art actuel, an artist-run centre, has supported experimental and innovative art. Our mission is to present the work of contemporary artists of all generations and origins in order to promote contemporary art in Montreal, Quebec and Canada.
As the only artist-run centre dedicated exclusively to sculpture and hybrid installation practices, CIRCA stands out in the Quebec visual art milieu and occupies a prime position to promote this discipline, which is influenced by both traditional and contemporary art, and enriched through hybrid practices.
From the perspective of discovery and openness, we offer artists a space in which they are free to experiment, and we advocate for the principles of equality for all communities. Our basic values are to share knowledge and to advance experimentation and creativity in art.
Each year, CIRCA presents a rich and audacious program of artworks in order to create stimulating encounters for artists, cultural workers and the public.
In 2022, CIRCA received a generous donation from Pauline Desautels and creatied the Pauline-Desautels Award. CIRCA makes it a point of honour to give back to the art community: the award is given annually to a woman artist whose work in sculpture or installation has stood out in the eyes of the public and the art community, and has been appreciated as a whole over the course of the last three years.
CIRCA is :
- 820 artists whose work has been exhibited over the past 35 years;
- 7 to 8 art exhibitions per year;
- 6800 visitors per year;
- About 9 school groups, made up of about 200 students;
- 88 regular members + 4 honorary members;
- 46 members involved in 10 committees;
- Since 2022, the creation of the Pauline-Desautels Award which supports women artists.
