The Mission

CIRCA art actuel is an artist-run centre that supports experimentation and innovation. Its mission is to present the work of contemporary artists, from all generations, who place the sculptural object at the heart of their approach. The Centre supports projects that are in the spirit of a traditional sculpture practice and those that result in hybrid sculptural and installation forms, arising from contact with other mediums such as drawing, print, photography, digital and painting. All this shows a strong engagement in supporting the development of sculpture and installation practices, in a spirit of openness and renewal.

The Prize

The amount of $ 5000 is awarded to the artist.

Eligibility Criteria

– A woman who is an artist of any generation;

– A permanent residence in Quebec;

– The project presented must relate to the mandate of CIRCA art actuel;

– The artist must propose a project that has been presented in the last three years, in a recognized exhibition place or in the public space.

Criteria for Awarding the Prize

The project:

– demonstrates an art practice that is engaged with concerns such as the social, political, feminist, environment…;

– must have had a significant impact on the artist’s career and/or the art world;

– must convey the innovative nature of the project in relation to the artist’s approach.

The members of the selection committee will evaluate the artistic quality of the project.

Presentation of Your Submission

Include a cover page with the following information:

– title, brief description, date of the work’s presentation in the space and its location. Include at least one photograph;

– a text presenting the project, a maximum of 750 words;

– a letter of recommendation from a cultural professional (curator, curatorial assistant, art historian, gallery director, etc.). This letter must address the criteria for the award and must not exceed 500 words;

– a artist’s statement, a maximum of 300 words;

– an up-to-date curriculum vitae;

– a maximum of five (5) photographs of the work, with description and preferably in context. If you deem it relevant, include a Vimeo link.

Please compile all of these documents into a single PDF (JPEG not accepted).

The selection committee composed of at least two CIRCA art actuel artist members and one invited guest from the art community will evaluate the projects.

CIRCA art actuel Regular Programming – 2024-2025

The Mission

CIRCA Art Actuel is an artist-run centre that supports experimentation and innovation. Its mission is to present the work of contemporary artists, from all generations, who place the sculptural object at the heart of their approach. The Centre supports projects that are in the spirit of a traditional sculpture practice and those that result in hybrid sculptural and installation forms, arising from contact with other mediums such as drawing, print, photography, digital and painting. All this shows a strong engagement in supporting the development of sculpture and installation practices, in a spirit of openness and renewal.

The Criteria of Representativeness Extracted from the Programming Policy

CIRCA art actuel exhibitions are selected by the programming committee, which is composed of active members, members of the board of directors, the director and an invited guest. The programming aims to represent a variety of generations, backgrounds and an equitable number of male and female artists (while considering gender identities). We value diversity and Indigenousness and encourage artists and curators who identify with these communities to apply.

The Selection Criteria:

  • The relevance of the project in relation to contemporary sculpture and installation practices.
  • The uniqueness of the art proposal in relation to current contemporary art practices
  • The concern for a variety of projects to be selected, according to type of practice

Fees

Each artist receives the CARFAC fee in effect for the year of the exhibition.

The curator receives $1000 for the project, which must occupy the 2 galleries of CIRCA art actuel, and the project’s artists receive the CARFAC fee, according to the number of artists in the exhibition.

  • Up-to-date CV
  • Artist Statement (300 words maximum)
  • Art Exhibition proposal (400 words maximum)
  • 15 images of recent artwork with descriptions
  • Vimeo link for videos

CURATOR

Please include the following documents in A SINGLE PDF (JPG not accepted)

  • Up-to-date CV of the curator
  • Up-to-date CV of the artists
  • Curator’s project proposal
  • Artist statement of the artists (300 words each maximum)
  • 3 or 4 images of recent work of each participating artist

If you do not receive an acknowledgment of receipt during the two weeks after you have sent your application, please contact us at circa@circa-art.com

The Programming Committee has the right to assign Gallery I or Gallery II to the artist. However, please don’t hesitate to specify in which gallery you wish to exhibit, or if you would like to use both galleries.

Reminder: The curator’s project must occupy both galleries.
