Thematic Talk | 30th anniversary | Fire and origins
- Caroline Boileau and Sylvie Tourangeau
Is the concept of spatialization enough of an issue for elaborating an artistic gesture? Wishing to test the
various aspects of this notion, Caroline Boileau and Sylvie Tourangeau propose an on-the-spot reflection
about the materiality and invisibility of space. Locating, adapting and revealing: these three verbs in
relation to each other will serve as a premise for developing an organic and discursive exchange. Can the
spatialization process avoid the performative?

Origins and Archives
Yves Louis-Seize and Éloi Desjardins
The founding of an artist-run center is a commitment to creativity, research and innovation. In what context was CIRCA art actuel set up? Yves Louis-Seize, one of CIRCA’s three founding members, proposes a look back at the Centre’s beginnings, recalling the artists and factors that contributed to the place’s creation along with the initial goals and objectives. He will tell of his involvement and will present his views about CIRCA. Éloi Desjardins was an assistant at CIRCA during the 2011-2012 season when Maurice Achard was the director, and he has hosted a radio show and a blog / webzine Un Show de mot’arts on the visual arts. He will look at issues concerning archives, networks and mediation of contemporary art that are also the core of his practice.

Stephen Schofield
Stephen Schofield returns to fairy tales, most notably Puss in Boots, to tell a new story of cunning, transformation and survival in the art world. Referring to key artworks in his own practice as well as to those of other sculptors and artists, he shapes a contemporary allegory of the artist’s life, career and soul. This new story written for the 30th anniversary of CIRCA art actuel traces the passage of time and the metamorphosis of imagination.

The Beginning of the End
Manuela Lalic and Mathieu Cardin
At the boundary of 2 D and 3 D, there is an area where Mathieu Cardin and Manuela Lalic, each in their own way, are particularly committed. On the razor’s edge, in this passage from one to the other, how do these artists question spatiality and the place of image, of representation versus installation? This meeting elaborates on The Beginning of the End, of one space-time compared to another.
